Gentle Births Happen at Home

Going to the Hospital

Sometimes it is necessary to go to the hospital during labor.  The vast majority of transfers are non-emergency transfers and everything goes smoothly and without much fuss.  Typically, I will call the doctor or CNM that will be helping us, explain the situation and details of the transfer can be arranged.  Then either the doctor or I will call the hospital so they can be prepared to meet us.  Almost always transfer is done by private car and we go straight up to the Labor and Delivery area of the hospital.  Once there either the nurse will do an initial assessment and notify the doctor or CNM, or the doctor or CNM will be there to see you.  Because I do not have hospital privileges, I cannot continue to provide care for you once we arrive at the hospital, however I will stay with you and support and advocate for you.  Usually I can even be with you if a cesarean section becomes necessary.

The most common reasons we need to transfer to the hospital are non-progressive labor and membrane rupture with no labor.  Neither of these are emergencies.  Very occasionally signs of infection in the mother or a baby that doesn’t maintain his/her vital signs have resulted in transfer as well.
